Ontwerpster Vivian Boehringer voorzag ons FabLab afgelopen week van een gloednieuwe muursticker. Haar meer dan manshoge ontwerp beeldt een paar dampende schoorstenen af, waarvan de rook verandert in vliegende vogels. Nogal toepasselijk dus voor een plaats waar we met hightech machines werken aan creatieve projecten.

Vivian verdeelde haar digitale ontwerp met Illustrator in verschillende banen. Zo kon de bijna drie meter hoge afbeelding met de snijplotter worden uitgesneden uit folie van zestig centimeter breed. Het overbrengen van de stickers was nog even een spannende operatie. Op een ladder manoeuvreerden stagiair Trevor en vrijwilliger Nigel grote vellen transfertape in positie. Gelukkig is het nu af en hoeven we alleen nog maar van ons nieuwe uitzicht te genieten!

Graphic designer Fabio Bartali had the idea to make a chocolate pilcrow (¶ = end of paragraph sign). With a few sketches, he came to the CabFabLab to figure out the best way to bring his project to life.

Our intern Sjors helped Fabio design a 3D model in SolidWorks. We then assisted Fabio in working with the CNC router to machine the positive mold for the silicone resin. This mold was used to create a negative silicone mold to produce the chocolate character.

Fabio sent the chocolate pilcrow to his clients as a holiday gift. This project was partly inspired by Hans Wisbrun’s ChocoPi project. And don’t forget to check out Fabio’s project log on his blog (in Dutch).

Last week we went shopping for some chemicals that were needed for our flame polisher. None of our local suppliers had MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) in stock, so we settled on using acetone instead. Acetone is also part of the chemical ketone solvent famliy and produces similar results.

We had to fill the machine with a distilled water and hydroxide solution, which is used in an electrolytic process to produce combustible oxygen and hydrogen gas. This gas is fed through a second tank where the acetone will evaporate and add to the mixture. This gas mixture will flow through the small nozzle of the hand gun when the knob is turned and can simply be lit with a lighter. The machine is very easy to use and it requires about 30 seconds before it’s ready for use.

The flame polisher can be used to smooth the edges of CNC machined acrylic sheet with a small and very hot flame.  This process is very quick and clean when compared to manually sanding and polishing the edges. Another advantage is that you can easily polish pockets and those hard-to-reach spots of very detailed objects.

Below is an example of the result that can be achieved with this small machine. We used some scrap CNC machined acrylic sheet to test and practice flame polishing. The left part hasn’t been treated yet and the right part got a quick polishing treatment, you can clearly see the difference! Sinds een paar weken heeft het CabFabLab de beschikking over een medium size cnc portaalfreesmachine met een netto werkoppervlak van 600 x 1000 x 100 mm. De freesmachine heeft een 1000 watt freesspindel waarvan het toerental regelbaar is van 5000 tot 25000 toeren per minuut.

Met behulp van deze machine kunnen veel verschillende soorten materialen worden bewerkt die niet geschikt zijn voor verwerking op onze laser cutter. Enkele voorbeelden zijn houtsoorten zoals multiplex, mdf en hardhout. Kunststoffen zoals Lexan (polycarbonaat), geschuimd PVC, acrylaat (plexiglas), POM, PU schuim (chemisch hout) en polystyreen (EPS / Piepschuim). Daarnaast kunnen ook diverse metaalsoorten bewerkt worden, denk hierbij aan dunne platen staal/RVS (tot +/- 3mm) en dikkere stukken koper, messing en aluminium (tot +/- 50 mm voor 2.5D freeswerk). Ook het dubbelzijdig frezen en boren van printplaten behoort tot de mogelijkheden. Surf voor een impressie van de installatie en ingebruikname even naar onze Flickr photostream.

Daarnaast is ook onze traditionele werkplaats aangevuld met professioneel handgereedschap van o.a. BMI, Heyco, Felo en Heytec.

Op dit moment wordt er nog hard gewerkt aan de inrichting van de hout- en metaalwerkplaats in unit 73, maar met de CNC freesmachine en het nieuwe gereedschap zijn we al een aardig eind op weg. Komende tijd worden o.a. de werkbanken en gereedschapborden in orde gemaakt, daarna gaan we op zoek naar diverse stationaire machines zoals een zaagtafel, vacuumvorm machine, vlampolijster, kunststof buigbank en een lintzaagmachine.
